Introduction

The project

What if a familiar song could be heard through a different instrument? In “Fado ao Piano”, Mário Moita places the piano at the centre of interpretation, reviving a form of accompaniment connected to fado’s history. Commentary, images and cultural context accompany the music, creating different ways into the repertoire. Somewhere between a concert and a musical conversation, the format can appeal both to those who already know the genre and to those seeking to discover it. For auditoriums and cultural gatherings, the proposition values listening and curiosity: recognising a melody, understanding its context and following how voice and piano give it expression in a shared moment on stage.

Career

Artistic journey

Developed in Japan in 2001 with historian Ito Genjiro, the show grew from Mário Moita’s research into piano-accompanied fado. That work led to the book/CD “Fado ao Piano — Tradição versus Inovação”, presented at Museu do Fado in April 2007. The record contains fifteen tracks, including “Tudo Isto É Fado”, “Ai Mouraria” and “Coimbra”, revealing the breadth of the repertoire explored. The format’s history includes presentations in Portugal, France and Brazil. Research and interpretation do not appear as separate elements: commentary and audiovisual material help contextualise what is heard. The project draws its identity from that meeting of history, discovery and concert performance.
