Introduction
The project
Under Kevin Rowland’s leadership, Dexys Midnight Runners bring British soul, pop and Celtic influences together in music where the voice tells stories. “Geno” and “Come On Eileen” offer entry points into an identity combining rhythmic drive and personal expression, without exhausting it in those two titles. Autobiographical writing and an exploration of emotions add further layers to the repertoire. For festivals and British music programmes, the project can connect widely recognised songs with a body of work shaped by storytelling. The meeting between the collective energy of a chorus and the individuality of its performer is an important part of its artistic appeal.
Career
Artistic journey
Formed in 1978, Dexys Midnight Runners developed their career under Kevin Rowland’s leadership. “Geno” and “Come On Eileen” reached No. 1 in the UK, bringing wider attention to their blend of soul, pop and Celtic influences. After 1985’s “Don’t Stand Me Down”, the full name appeared on an album again with “LOVE”, released on 4 September 2026 and produced by David Holmes. The record explores memories, family relationships, ageing and affection. “My Life in England Pt.1” places that period within Rowland’s autobiographical writing. The connecting thread is the desire to turn experience into song: from the best-known narratives to recent chapters, the voice and the construction of a story remain central.
