Introduction
Between Nazaré and Ribatejo, Cláudia Zarro finds in fado a way to sing about places, the sea and everyday life. Her birthplace and adopted region enter a repertoire in which words help shape an identity. On “ReCente”, her own writing meets interpretations of other authors, opening a dialogue between tradition and song. For auditoriums and Portuguese music programmes, the proposition can offer listening centred on the voice and the meaning of the lyrics. It also invites discovery of how very specific references — a landscape, a memory, a way of speaking — can find musical expression and become recognisable to those who hear them.
Career
Cláudia Zarro’s journey in fado began in 2010, after winning the Amigos do Fado de Tomar amateur competition. In 2024, she received the Best Performance Award at the Festival Nacional da Canção Rural, representing Cartaxo. Her debut album, “ReCente”, was presented at Centro Cultural do Cartaxo in January 2025, with seven musicians accompanying her voice, and arrived on digital platforms with ten tracks. “Nazaré”, “Rouxinol do Ribatejo” and “O Sabor do Fado” locate some of the record’s geographical and musical references. Combining the fado singer’s own words with interpretations of other authors, this work gives recorded form to the meeting of her roots, performing experience and desire to tell stories through song.
