Introduction

The project

António Pinto Basto brings words, melody and his Alentejo roots together in fado that invites listeners to hear what each text has to say. Born in Évora, he combines performing experience with work as a lyricist and composer, giving song different forms of expression. “A Canção da Rosa Branca” is a reference point in a recording career begun in 1970, in which tradition and original creation meet. For venues and programmes devoted to Portuguese culture, the proposition can highlight poetry and the intimacy of interpretation. Alentejo is not simply his place of origin: it is one of the references that help locate his musical world.

Career

Artistic journey

António Pinto Basto’s relationship with fado began within his family, through musical gatherings and the poems of his grandfather, João de Vasconcellos e Sá. He recorded his first EP in 1970, aged 17, and achieved national prominence with “Rosa Branca” in 1988. After combining music with civil engineering, he went on to devote himself to an artistic career. His discography includes “Maria” and “Confidências à Guitarra”; his collective work also includes Quatro Cantos, devoted to fado repertoire. In 2020, “Eléctrico 28” marked five decades of recordings. These chapters bring family heritage, composition and performing experience together, offering different ways into a concert centred on the voice and the power of words.
