Introduction
In ABC, pop songwriting meets the rhythm of disco-funk and the sophistication of new wave. Led by Martin Fry, the project builds songs in which expressive melodies, elaborate arrangements and the desire to dance coexist without losing sight of the voice. “The Look of Love”, “Poison Arrow” and “When Smokey Sings” offer ways into that world, where the intimate side of a song can take on an expansive dimension. For pop festivals, galas and programmes devoted to British music, the proposition offers a repertoire of varied colours and tempos. It connects memories of the hits with the discovery of a discography that has changed direction while keeping a recognisable core.
Career
Formed in Sheffield, ABC reached No. 1 in the UK in 1982 with “The Lexicon of Love”. Produced by Trevor Horn, the album brought together “Poison Arrow”, “The Look of Love” and “All of My Heart”, establishing a distinctive combination of pop songwriting, arrangements and rhythm. Their discography took other paths with “How to Be a Zillionaire” and “Alphabet City”, associated with songs such as “Be Near Me” and “When Smokey Sings”. In 2016, “The Lexicon of Love II” returned the project to the UK Top 10. Martin Fry continues to lead ABC and connect these stages. Heard as a whole, their career shows how the same attention to melody can accommodate changes in production, atmosphere and musical language.
